A pipeline that pumps potable water to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon has broken for the sixth time since April.
The North Rim of the Grand Canyon opened for the season on May 15 and will continue to take visitors despite the pipeline break and wet weather. The National Parks Service initiated level 2 water conservation measures, which according to Kris Fister, spokeswoman for the Grand Canyon National Park, includes using paper or plastic dishes, portable toilets, and encouraging visitors to hold back on water use.
“The pipeline is it starts taking in water from basically it gets water from roaring springs, which is just down below the North Rim of Grand Canyon. So it's a source of water for all the water within the developed area of Grand Canyon National Park. This break is specifically delivering water to the North Rim.”
Fister says crews are expecting to begin repair work on the pipe this Saturday. Repairs are estimated to take at least 10 work days.
