Hemp is officially legal for industrial farmers in Arizona to grow. While this could be a big moneymaker, the risks are just as big.
Hemp can be used for a variety of products from clothes to rope — even food. But if the hemp Arizona farmers grow exceeds more than .3 percent THC, they could lose their crops.
Chelsea McGuire of the Arizona Farm Bureau says it’s difficult for farmers to find the right crop given how recent hemp has been legal.
“The problem, though, is that industrial hemp has only been legal to grow in America under certain situations since 2014. That’s not a lot of time for us to acknowledge and to develop the technology that we need and to develop the knowledge that we need of what genetics work well," McGuire said.
Hemp was legalized under Congress’ 2018 Farm Bill.
