Portrait Artist Injects Diversity Into The Traditional Genre

Portraiture has been a significant part of art for centuries and, for some, it’s become too traditional and associated with older generations rather than our current, more diverse population and culture.

Artist Shizu Saldamando has a diverse background herself, born to parents of Japanese and Mexican descent, and the portraits of her friends and relatives reflect that, while also staying true to what is expected of the genre.

Saldamando is being featured in a new exhibit at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art or SMOCA. The Show spoke with her there recently, asking her how important it was for people to see others who look like them in her realm of art.
