Health Care Software Group Settles With Arizona, Other States Over Data Breach

Arizona’s attorney general announced this week that a multistate lawsuit with a medical records company has resulted in a settlement.

The lawsuit came about after a 2015 data breach related to a health care software company called Medical Informatics Engineering. The breach affected the health data of about 26,000 Arizonans, according to the Attorney General's Office.

Arizona’s Mark Brnovich and 15 other attorneys general argued that because the company hadn’t put in certain data-security measures, it violated the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

The data breach exposed names, Social Security numbers, lab results and other information.

The Indiana-based company agreed to pay out just under a million dollars to all 16 states. A class-action lawsuit on behalf of affected patients is still ongoing.
