MEXICO CITY — Mexican government officials are in Washington, D.C., after President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on Mexican goods, unless Mexico stops the migration from Central America. Meanwhile, at the Mexico-Guatemala border, a new caravan arrived.
Mexico’s National Institute of Migration confirmed the arrival of hundreds of migrants coming from Central America and crossing through the southern state of Chiapas.
Mexican authorities stopped the caravan on a highway checkpoint, where the migrants were asked to follow the Mexican protocol and register. They were taken on buses to a migratory station nearby in the city of Tapachula.
The number of deportees in Mexico has tripled throughout the year, from 5,884 in January to 16,507 in May.
The number of migrants that have been taken to a migratory station has also tripled, from 8,248 in January to 23,679 in May.
