The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has agreed to pay an inmate $175,000 after violating his constitutional rights.
Thomas Bastian’s attorney, Holly Gieszl, said multiple officers lied under oath about opening Bastian’s legal mail.
“Employees of our jail and our prison cannot expect to do this and then succeed in trying to cover up their actions with judges," Gieszl said. "They are going to be held accountable, and they cannot go in and attempt to testify in a way that is not truthful.”
A judge dismissed five felonies, including terrorism, against Bastian, and he was transferred from the Fourth Avenue Jail to a different prison.
