Arizona is among 14 states targeted by a civic engagement group seeking to increase voter registration.
Page Gardner, president of the Voter Participation Center, said their goal is to encourage underrepresented people to participate in elections.
“We want to close the gap between the voting eligible population among unmarried women, communities of color, and young people and their actual registration and voting rights,” Gardner said.
The Voter Participation Center is sending out more than 139,000 voter registration forms in Arizona to encourage residents to register to vote.
The group said 31.4% of eligible citizens in Arizona are not registered.
Gardner said African Americans, Latinos, unmarried women and Millennials in Arizona have very low registration rates.
“This means that their voices aren’t being heard in either the electorate or more importantly in public policy debates be it federal or state or local,” Gardner said.
Gardner said the group is targeting states that will be key in the 2020 elections.
