If demands for better housing, credit and health services weren’t met, the 130,000 members of Sonora’s branch of the Mexican Workers Confederation (CTM) were going to walk off the job starting July 8.
After receiving commitments from federal and state authorities, however, the union’s leader Javier Villarreal announced this week that the strike was off.
“In the end, the strategy worked, because a strike of that size is in no one’s interest,” he said.
Among the commitments made were to hire more doctors for the federal medical service in Sonora, and lower mortgage and credit interest rates for workers. The CTM represents workers in Hermosillo’s massive Ford Plant and other major manufacturing facilities.
