Stacey Champion: Arizona Corporation Commission Slow To Act After Heat-Related Death

During an emergency meeting yesterday, the Arizona Corporation Commission voted to keep electric companies it regulates — including Arizona Public Service — from shutting off service to customers who are behind on their bills during the state’s hottest time of year: June 1 to Oct. 15.

The action was taken in response to reporting that revealed 72-year-old Stephanie Pullman died last year when APS turned off her power. Pullman owed the utility $51.

Consumer advocate Stacey Champion sat down with The Show to talk about the Corporation Commission's action.

Champion launched a petition against APS' rate increase last year and crowdfunded for a lawyer to spearhead the challenge.

She says the rate increase contributed to Pullman's death.
