President Donald Trump's decision to postpone immigration sweeps caps a week of build-up to potential mass round-ups.
Trump said Monday, however, that efforts to deport millions of people will still start soon.
On Friday, reports said raids planned for Sunday would target thousands of family members who didn’t follow court orders to leave the country.
Before Trump delayed the operation on Saturday, activists like Rev. John Mireles, national chaplain for the League of United Latin American Citizens, were pooling resources to line up legal aid for anyone arrested.
“We have to be prepared for any situation regarding ICE immigration raids in our community,” he said. “This is basically a preventative measure on our part.”
It’s unclear if potential pushback by immigrant rights groups played a role in Trump’s decision.
The president said deportations will start in two weeks unless lawmakers come up with a fix on immigration.
