A photo published last week of a father and daughter who drowned in the Rio Grande quickly became a talking point in the national conversation over immigration. But it's not the first heartbreaking image that’s taken on such a prominent role.
Back in 2015, the world was shocked by the photo of a Syrian boy who washed up on a beach trying to cross into Europe, or 1989, when the image of a man standing in front of a column of Chinese tanks in Tiananmen Square brought home the story of protests in that country.
Those photos, and many others, have become significant pieces of history.
