Later this month, Phoenix plans to launch a pilot program to help people experiencing homelessness.
As many as 20 parking meters will be installed at four downtown intersections but not a single one will provide parking. Instead, the meters will accept cash and credit donations to supplement PHX C.A.R.E.S., the city’s homeless outreach program.
Other citiesacross the country have parking meter giving programs with money going to groups experienced with helping people get off the streets and secure permanent housing.
The meters are being donated, the city will spend about $900 to run the program, and after six months staff will report back on how much has been raised and spent. The meters will accept cash and credit and there will be no minimum donation required.
The locations include:
- Northeast corner of Third Avenue and Washington Street.
- Northwest corner of First Avenue and Jefferson Street.
- Northwest corner of Central Avenue and Adams Street.
- Northeast corner of Third and Van Buren streets.
