Law enforcement in the coastal Sonoran city of Guaymas have been the repeated targets of deadly attacks in recent months. In the wake of another attack this week, the U.S. Consulate in Hermosillo, Mexico warned visitors to use “extreme caution and avoid large public gatherings in Guaymas and Empalme.”

On Tuesday morning, a 42-year-old off-duty officer was gunned down in front of a convenience store by assassins on a motorcycle, according to a report provided by the city. With that murder, nine police officers have now been killed in the city in as many months.
Over the weekend, a group of officers was ambushed by gunmen, leaving one dead. Last October, five officers were killed in a single incident.
The popular Sonoran beach resort of San Carlos is near Guaymas.
A Guaymas city official was not immediately available for comment, and the state Attorney’s Office said it could not comment on the open investigation. Roughly 1,800 members of Mexico’s new National Guard force are expected to begin work in Sonora this month.
