Grand Canyon University is expanding its campus in Phoenix after purchasing property from a church.
In a statement, the university said its relationship with First Southern Baptist Church, near 31st Avenue and Camelback Road, has been strong for years and that the purchase agreement helps put the church in a strong financial position to further its mission while allowing the nonprofit Christian university to grow to meet student demands.
The university says the church plans to lease back the property as is during its relocation process. In the long term, the university plans to redevelop the property into a 200,000-square-foot building.
