Last month, a worker at a Goodwill store in Tucson found a Purple Heart medal while he was sifting through donations.
Now it has been returned to relatives of Nick D’Amelio, who was awarded the medal after his death.
His grandnephew, Doug Hanna, became emotional Friday during a ceremony to accept custody of the medal and said the timing couldn’t be better.
“Nick’s great great grandniece, my daughter, just recently took her oath and is about to embark on her career for the U.S. armed services,” said Hanna.
A husband and wife team of private investigators were responsible for tracking down Hanna.
