The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced it is directing $5.9 million to strengthen existing programs in Arizona that treat substance abuse and offer mental health services.
HHS said treatment for opioid addiction at federally funded sites has increased significantly in recent years.
A government spokesman said some of the money would go toward supporting and training additional behavioral health workers to treat a growing need in rural areas.
Three million will be used to strengthen prevention, treatment and recovery services in rural areas across the state.
