Gov. Ducey: No Need For Special Session On Gun Legislation

Gov. Doug Ducey said there’s no reason for a special session of the state Legislature to address gun legislation in the wake of mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio.

Ducey said there is no single law or policy that will stop mass shootings.

State Democrats called for a special session last week with House Minority Leader Charlene Fernandez tweeting she favored combating gun violence with “universal background checks, bans on military-style assault rifles and limits on high capacity magazines.”

But state Republicans opposed the call to return to the Capitol as Ducey said his safe schools plan can be accomplished in regular session.

Ducey said, “I’ve had a real focus on schools. We’ve been able to do some real work on that regarding improving our background checks, additional dollars for cops on campus and counselors inside the schools.”

He also favors Severe Threat Order of Protection orders that allow courts to remove guns from the hands of violent or mentally ill people.
