Credit card skimmers can now steal card information at gas pumps using Bluetooth technology. Fueling stations have been replacing the old equipment with newer and more secure credit-card readers.
Starting in October 2020, if gas stations have not installed chip-reading devices at the pump, liability will shift from credit card companies to the station owner-operators.
Michelle Wilson is with the Arizona Weights and Measures Services Division.
“Chip card readers will provide additional security. It may not solve the problem 100% but it definitely is a step in the right direction," Wilson said.
Wilson said she is aware of applications being developed to help detect the skimming devices, but her division doesn’t fully rely on them.
