The U.S. State Department is calling on the Mexican government to investigate the murder of a local news reporter this weekend, at least the 10th slaying of a journalist in that country this year.
The journalist, Nevith Condes Jaramillo, 42, was found dead with stab wounds on Saturday in the town of Tejupilco, about 100 miles southwest of Mexico City, according to local authorities and the advocacy group Reporters Without Borders.
Condes was an independent journalist and ran a news website called El Observatorio del Sur, or Southern Observatory, where he posted video advertisements and news reports that were often critical of local government officials.
On Friday, he posted a video in which Tejupiclo residents complained officials hadn't fixed a pothole in their neighborhood so big it had rendered the street unusable.
"This looks like a volcano or a meteor strike," Condes said.
A day later, Condes Jaramillo was found stabbed to death, the Mexico state Prosecutor's Office said.
