Hiking in the Phoenix area can be dangerous, even deadly. Park officials warn against hiking on heat advisory days, especially if you aren’t local.
Park officials don’t close trails on heat-advisory days, leaving decisions up to the discretion of individuals. But with many hikers having to be rescued this week, Amy Schnoes with the Lost Dutchman State Park recommends hiking only if you are experienced with extreme heat.
“We have a lot of folks that live in the area and they’re out hiking year-round here," Schnoes said. "They know the trails, they’re very well-versed in the conditions here, and they bring plenty of supplies. Those that do hike regularly are hiking really early in the morning or they’re hiking late in the day around sunset.”
Officials urge hikers to stay home if they aren’t sure about the safety of a trail.
