Tucson Couple Sentenced For Smuggling Rifles Into Mexico

A Tucson couple accused of smuggling more than a dozen rifles into Mexico was sentenced to federal prison.

The pair admitted to smuggling 16 AK variety semiautomatic rifles and a three larger .50-caliber rifles into Mexico in 2017. The guns were provided to a drug trafficker in that country, federal records show.

Both received about five-year-long prison sentences.

Their prosecution comes just days after a Mexican man was caught with several semi-auto rifles as he was leaving Arizona for Mexico.

Earlier this week, Mexico’s top diplomat vowed that country would freeze illicit weapons trafficking from the U.S.
