The families of two Mexico City college students who were killed during an earthquake on their university campus two years ago have dropped a lawsuit against the college.
The parents of Edgar Michel Azano, 19, and Juan Carlos Alvarez, 18, dropped their lawsuit against the Tecnológico de Monterrey after failed attempts at having authorities conduct an independent investigation into the collapse of a set of bridges that collapsed on students.
The families decided to no longer pursue the charges after meeting with officials from the university, Fernando Lopez, one of Alvarez’s uncles, said in an interview this week.
“Going to the authorities was like opening the wounds over and over again,” Lopez said. “It is probably better this way.”
Azano and Alvarez were two of the 370 people who were killed in central Mexico during the magnitude 7.1 earthquake of Sept. 19, 2017. Millions in 18 states across the country were expected to participate in a drill on the anniversary of the earthquake.
