Visible from both Sedona and Flagstaff, the Whiskey Fire is the latest in a string of blazes caused by lightning.
The Whiskey Fire grew to more than 5,800 acres and is now 34% contained. Firefighters are allowing it to burn within established fire lines.
The idea is to eliminate excess brush that could ignite another fire and to rejuvenate Coconino Forest’s overall health and wildlife.
Kait Webb is with the Coconino National Forest.
“They may do what we call hand-lines so they will dig down to mineral soil so removing any sort of vegetation ahead of the fire so that when it moves up to that point it then won’t have any fuel to move forward,” Webb said.
Webb said firefighters sometimes use a river or a road to contain a blaze.
No injuries have been reported and structures have not been threatened.
