This week Sonoran Gov. Claudia Pavlovich toured Acciona and Tuto Energy’s Puerto Libertad facility, one of the largest solar installations in Latin America. It started operating in early June, according to the state government.
With over 1.2 million panels, the 405-megawatt plant generates enough power for over half a million Mexican homes, according to a company release.
The array, about two hours southeast of Rocky Point, will offset nearly 1 million tons of carbon dioxide. It would cover more than 300 soccer fields.
Sonora, which boasts some of the highest solar irradiation rates in the hemisphere, now has nearly three-quarters of a gigawatt of utility-scale solar capacity, according to data from Asolmex. The 125-megawatt Orejana plant was just inaugurated in August.
