5th Annual Jaguar Day Festival In Sonora Celebrates Nature And Culture

This year marks the fifth annual Jaguar Day Festival in southern Sonora, Mexico. It’s a celebration that brings awareness to the endangered jaguar in this region.

The town of Álamos, Sonora, is hosting its annual Día del Jaguar celebration this Friday and Saturday.

The event started five years ago as a way to create a positive perception of the jaguar in the local community. But it’s grown into a regional event that brings together academic research, cultural performances and kid-friendly activities celebrating the large, endangered cat.

"It has become something more than just us as an NGO organizing Day of the Jaguar. It becomes something that we’re building together, said Lydia Lozano, Mexico program director of Nature and Culture Incorporated, which organizes the event.

Lozano said more than 40 groups from Álamos, and all across Sonora, Arizona and beyond are participating in the free two-day festival this year.
