MEXICO CITY — Recent protests in Mexico City have been disrupted by riots where several people have been hurt. The local and federal governments are being strongly criticized for not stopping the violence.
The so-called anarchists have damaged public and private property, setting businesses on fire, damaging bus stops and vandalizing monuments. In some cases, they’ve also attacked the police and journalists.
The police have not stopped the riots. Instead, Mexico City’s mayor, Claudia Sheinbaum, ordered hundreds of bureaucrats to build a human barrier at the rally celebrating the 1968 student movement. The city government spent thousands of dollars to buy them shirts for the occasion. The strategy didn’t work.
During a press conference, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that he will call the vandals’ parents and grandparents if they continue with the violence.
The president said that, regardless of the events, things are more peaceful under his government, and that his conservative opponents are behind the anarchists.
