More than 30 Sonoran business leaders met with the Mexican president this week to lobby for projects in their state.
The sizable group discussed a number of private developments being pursued in the state. But they also asked President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador — known widely as AMLO — to support key infrastructure projects that will help make those investments viable.
“Businesspeople are willing to bet on our state,” said Arturo Fernandez, president of the northern Sonoran branch of the Mexican Employers’ Confederation. “But we also need the federal government to make a similar bet.”
Among the projects they’d like support for are a major highway connecting Sonora and neighboring Chihuahua, a new border port of entry and other roadway investments.
Fernandez, who was present at the meeting, said that AMLO gave the group roughly two hours of his time.
