Proposed I-10 improvement project.

A radical facelift is being planned for the state’s busiest segment of Interstate 10. But first, freeway planners are seeking public input.

About 300,000 vehicles drive through the Broadway Curve along I-10 every day. It’s well known as a congested, bottlenecked area, prompting ADOT to plan additional lanes to improve the flow of traffic.

Tom Herrmann, spokesman for the Arizona Department of Transportation, said plans to make it a six-lane highway including two HOV lanes.

“This is something that we’ve been studying for a while because we all have seen the growth. I’d say Maricopa County is the fastest growing county in the country and so we’ve all seen that we all recognize that we need to accommodate traffic.”

The stretch of I-10 that would be expanded is between Ray Road and 24th Street. ADOT is now accepting comments on the plan and a hearing is scheduled for Oct. 24.
