Maricopa County Assessor Paul Petersen is in the custody of federal authorities.

He was turned over on Friday in the wake of dozens of felony charges he now faces in Arizona, Utah and Arkansas. The charges stem from an alleged illegal adoption scheme involving Marshallese women whose children Petersen arranged to be adopted.

The case has led to a variety of legal questions, not only in terms of Petersen’s case, but also for the women involved.

To explain what could happen next, The Show reached out to former U.S. Attorney for Arizona Dennis Burke, now an attorney with Ballard Spahr.
