Arizona Copper Mine Workers Strike Continues; Contract Negotiations At A Standstill

Some Arizona mine workers walked off the job earlier this weekafter voting to strike against unfair labor practices.

Workers in Arizona and Texas chose not to accept a recent offer from the Tucson-based copper producer Asarco.

Karla Schumann, who is with the Teamsters union representing the workers, said contract talks are still at a standstill.

“There’s no negotiations going on currently. I mean parties need to get back to the table, but for right now there are no negotiations happening," Schumann said. "Bottomline, these guys deserve a fair contract, a respectable contract and their offer was definitely not that.”

Schumann said mine workers have been without a pay increase for about 10 years, if not more.
