A federal jury convicted a former Hopi law enforcement ranger of sexually assaulting a woman he arrested.
Three years ago, MacKenzie Davis arrested a woman for driving under the influence. On the way to the Navajo Detention Center, he pulled to the side of the road and assaulted her while she was handcuffed in the backseat of his patrol car.
A jury found Davis guilty of abusive sexual contact, violating her civil rights and destroying evidence.
"A sexual assault is doubly devastating to the victim when perpetrated by a law enforcement officer, whose only duty was to protect her from such harm," Arizona U.S. Attorney Michael Bailey said in a statement.
Davis' sentencing hearing is set for Feb. 24. He faces up to 23 years in prison.
