This week, students at Douglas High School returned from fall break sporting a new look: clear backpacks. This new, mandatory policy was implemented after a weapon was brought on campus.
The clear backpack policy went into effect after the school went into a two-and half-hour lockdown. Earlier this month, there was a report that someone had brought a weapon on campus. Police confirmed the tip. After several meetings, the school board unanimously voted to implement a clear backpack policy.
Ana Samaniego is the Douglas Unified School District Superintendent. She said she knows more needs to be done to keep students and faculty safe.
"So, we are looking and researching into other measures that Douglas High school can implement from having counselors to being involved, potential scanners, a texting system where kids can feel safe in reporting incidents that they may become aware of," she said.
Samaniego said she’s unaware if other school districts enforce a similar clear backpack policy.
