Burial Service At Arizona Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery At Marana Will Honor Unclaimed, Impoverished Vets

On Saturday, a burial for 37 unclaimed or impoverished veterans will be held at the Arizona Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery at Marana.

The unclaimed veterans being buried come from all branches of the military and served anytime since World War I. Their identities are known but sometimes the families can’t be found.

Nicole Baker from the Arizona Department of Veteran Services said it doesn’t matter what situation the veteran was in, it wants to bury them respectfully and with full military honors. She said the community often helps do this.

“Each and every time we say we have a veteran and we need the community to step up and be their families, without fail the community always answers that call," said Baker.

Baker said she expects a crowd of about 500 at Saturday’s ceremony.

The burial ceremony sometimes connects family members to their lost relatives who never knew what happened to their remains.
