Last week, we learned that APS, the state’s largest electric utility, has been earning nearly $30 million more a year than is currently authorized by the state Corporation Commission.
Now, APS wants even more. The utility is seeking a $184 million rate increase, which would raise the average household bill by about 5.4%.
That works out to about $7.50, give or take depending on the time of year.
Ryan Randazzo with the Arizona Republic is covering this latest rate case filed by APS. He talked with The Show.
Besides looking at rates that APS charges for electricity, the Arizona Corporation Commission is also examining summer shut-off policies. This past summer, commissioners put a moratorium on power shut-offs after learning customers who had their power turned off had died following high heat days.
To talk with The Show about what the commission is doing on shut-offs and the APS rate case is Justin Olson, a member of the Arizona Corporation Commission. Before we talk about shut-off policy, can you explain how you are approaching the new rate increase request by APS, because evidence has been presented showing the previous rate increase was excessive?
