'The Battle Of 187': Podcast Explores How A California Immigration Law Helped Turn The State Blue

Twenty-five years ago this week, nearly 60% of Californians voted to pass Proposition 187. The initiative forbade free health care, education and other state services to undocumented immigrants.

In the years since, courts ruled it unconstitutional, but regardless, the effect of Proposition 187 has been felt far and wide. It's passage in California, however, seemingly marked the beginning of a Latino backlash that has turned the state blue ever since.

Gustavo Arellano is a staff writer for the Los Angeles Times and the host of a new podcast called " This is California: The Battle of 187," which can be heard on NPR’s Latino USA. The Show spoke with Arellano about this moment in history.

For more on that, The Show also spoke with Steve Gallardo, a Maricopa County supervisor and former Arizona Senate minority leader.
