An Arizona Border Patrol agent shot and injured a Russian migrant during a physical altercation near Lukeville on Thursday, according to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection news release Friday.
At about 7:15 p.m. Thursday, an agent from the Border Patrol’s Ajo Station was responding to an individual suspected to have crossed the border outside a legal port of entry just east of Lukeville, CBP spokesman Rob Daniels said.
The agent attempted to arrest the suspect, identified as a Russian citizen. A physical altercation ensued and the agent shot and injured the migrant.
“The individual, who is a Russian national, was flown to a Phoenix area hospital with non-life threatening injuries," Daniels said.
In the press release Friday, CBP said the FBI and CBP’s Use of Force Incident Team are currently investigating the shooting.
