The University of Arizona will soon offer free tuition to some of its medical students. The school is trying to address a shortage of primary care doctors in the state.
Arizona currently meets only 40% of its need for primary care physicians, according to the Health Resources and Services Administration.
But, next semester, University of Arizona Colleges of Medicine in Tucson and Phoenix will grant free tuition to about 100 students.
In exchange, they’ll have to practice primary care in a federally designated underserved community in Arizona for at least two years after finishing their residency.
To be eligible, applicants must be an Arizona resident and current full-time medical student enrolled in one of the UA Colleges of Medicine.
