State Route 67 to the Grand Canyon’s North Rim closed Tuesday ahead of a winter storm watch.
Snow and rain showers are expected to begin in northern Arizona late Wednesday evening. The National Weather Service in Flagstaff has projected dozens of inches of snow accumulation through the holiday weekend, with Flagstaff seeing up to 27 inches of snow from Thursday morning through Saturday evening.
In social media posts, the Flagstaff office warned drivers from taking to the roads during the snowstorm as “travel conditions will become difficult to impossible Thanksgiving Day and Friday.”
Doug Nintzel with the Arizona Department of Transportation said travelers should avoid driving in the snowstorm conditions.
“If you’re going to be traveling in the high country you should schedule travel ahead of the storm if at all possible. You should not plan on driving into the storm when it arrives,” Nintzel said.
Ninztel said further road closures might go into effect if hazardous conditions endanger drivers.
