MEXICO CITY — President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that drug cartels will be designated as terrorist groups. The Mexican government is warning that the country won't admit any action affecting sovereignty.
Mexico's administration considers the August shooting at El Paso Walmart, where eight Mexicans died, a terrorist attack. But President Andrés Manuel López Obrador says his government will not designate drug cartels as terrorist groups.
López Obrador stated he wants cooperation from the U.S., not interventionism. He will meet on Monday with relatives of the LeBaron family victims killed near the U.S.-Mexico border earlier this month by suspected drug cartels.
The Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs Marcelo Ebrard plans to meet with Secretary of State Michael Pompeo to discuss actions following Trump’s designation to stop drug and weapon trafficking.
