The U.S. government just closed the window for hiring civilians to work with the Border Patrol along the southwest border.
The agency first announced the new civilian jobs last spring when it said it’d been inundated with asylum seekers trying to enter the U.S. The job opened up just last week and closed last Tuesday.
It pays between $37,000 and $49,000 a year with postings in McAllen and El Paso, Texas; and in Yuma.
Civilians are expected to help provide care to migrants, processing them and clerical duties. But the agency has not said what sort of training civilians will be provided.
Astrid Dominguez is with the ACLU. "Are these going to be considered Border Patrol agents. will they be wearing a uniform, will they be wearing a gun, what type of training will they receive," she said.
An agency spokeswoman would not say how many people the agency hopes to hire.
