After they say an armed group chased them off the site of mass graves outside of Rocky Point, a group of volunteer searchers says they want to return.
In early November, the Madres Buscadoras de Sonora — or the Sonoran Searching Mothers — were digging for missing people several miles outside the popular beach resort. That’s when they say the armed men arrived and told them to leave and never come back. And that’s what they decided to do, initially.
But now group leader Ceci Flores says they hope to return in January but only if security forces are able to accompany them.
“There are still a lot of bodies buried,” said group leader Ceci Flores about why they want to go back.
More than 50 have been confirmed by state authorities.
In the meantime, with Christmas fast approaching, the group is collecting gift donations for the children of Sonora’s many missing people.
