A cross-border youth tennis program is hosting a winter celebration in Nogales on Saturday. It will include a free clinic for kids and an exhibition game with the University of Arizona men’s team.
Charlie Cutler, founder and director of the Border Youth Tennis Exchange (BYTE), uses tennis to promote youth development and cross-border interaction. He said the Winter Rally is a chance for communities on both sides of the border to come together.
“To celebrate the kids’ achievements. To celebrate the program’s success. To celebrate the work they’ve been doing for the last year," he said. "It really represents everything that BYTE stands for."
The rally starts at 11 a.m. Saturday with a free clinic at the Madison Park tennis courts in Nogales, Arizona. There will also be art stations, lunch and a UA men’s tennis team exhibition match at 1 p.m.
Four public tennis courts renovated and resurfaced through a partnership between BYTE and the city of Nogales will also be unveiled during the event this year, Cutler said.
“We’re really excited and happy that they worked on that and supported the tennis community," he said. "So this is our opportunity to thank them an promote tennis in Nogales."
