Fewer movies are being released in theaters as streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+ and Apple+ have spent billions on buying and creating competitive content.
But the theaters that still exhibit those movies are owned by private companies and not by the studios producing the films. That’s been true for nearly seven decades, thanks to what are known as the Paramount Consent Decrees.
But it could be changing because of an announcement by the U.S. Department of Justice to terminate the decrees.
