Birth rates in Arizona are on the decline, especially among the Hispanic population.
George Hammond directs the Economic and Business Research Center at the University of Arizona. He said while birth rates among non-Hispanic women dropped 14% in the decade following 2007, Hispanic birth rates dropped three times as much.
"The Hispanic women that are coming into their childbearing years, they're starting to act a lot more like the non-Hispanic population," he said. "So they're kind of seeing the world in similar ways. So they're waiting longer and they're more sensitive to economic conditions."
In 2007, there were 102,687 births. The number is now less than 81,000.
