You may want to be more vigilant to protect yourself from the flu and other illnesses.

The Arizona Department of Health Services reports the flu is more widespread this year — 929 cases were reported the week that ended Dec. 14. That's more than twice the average number of cases over the past five years.

And an outbreak of mumps, a disease you rarely hear about, is a cause of concern in central Arizona. The Maricopa County Public Health Department reports 20 cases of mumps in 2019, the highest level in decades.

Dr. Rebecca Sunenshine, medical director for disease control at Maricopa County Department of Public Health, joined The Show to discuss the public health threat both illnesses pose.
