2020 Census Could Affect Arizona Unemployment Numbers

As we near the end of 2019, unemployment rates in the U.S. and Arizona remain low. Although no one can’t fully predict what 2020 will look like, the newest figures show labor force levels continuing to increase.

Doug Walls is with the Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity. He said the upcoming 2020 census could also have an impact on employment.

“We’re already starting to see increases in employment, more at the U.S. level than within Arizona, but those will impact our numbers just as they had in 2010," Walls said.

Walls said 2019 was a good year for the labor market with wages increasing and the unemployment rate going down.

Arizona’s current unemployment rate is at 4.7%, compared to the national rate of 3.5 percent.
