Republican Arizona Rep. Debbie Lesko spoke out in defense of President Donald Trump’s "Remain In Mexico" policy for asylum seekers.
In an appearance on "Cavuto Live" on Fox News on Saturday, Lesko said asylum seekers were abusing the system and needed to be controlled.
“The president’s No. 1 job and Congress’s No. 1 job is protecting its own people ... and, boy, we had such a border crisis," she said. "People were using this loophole and were flooding our borders and they just claimed asylum and once they got in they were here, and most of them didn’t show up to court.”
The policy has been criticized by migrant rights groups, asylum officers, and legal scholars. Data released by the TRAC Immigration Project at Syracuse University shows that more than 56,000 asylum seekers have had their claims denied under the new policy.
