The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors may give a more formal explanation of its vote to keep in place the suspension of Paul Petersen.
The embattled county assessor was told to stay home after the board concluded that Petersen neglected the job. And the road to the board’s conclusion started when police accused Petersen of running an illegal adoption scam.
The board is scheduled to consider whether to give a written opinion on its decision not to lift Petersen’s unpaid suspension.
A county spokesman said some supervisors think there should be an explanation like one issued by a court. But it’s unclear if a document will be drafted.
The board’s December vote to deny Petersen’s appeal came with a scathing report on the contents of his county-owned laptop. The board moved beyond suspension and voted to seek Petersen’s removal from office.
Attorney Kory Langhofer has threatened to sue unless the board let Petersen go back to work early. Langhofer did not respond to a request for comment.
