A number of major battles — some involving soldiers and others not — have been fought over oil, particularly in the Middle East since the mid-20th century.
Thanks to different kinds of conflicts and so many areas of drought around the world, those fights have shifted in certain places to water.
Who controls it? Who gets to decide on the infrastructure to bring it — or not bring it — to various communities?
Peter Gleick is co-founder of the Pacific Institute and is involved with the Water Conflict Chronology, which measures how many events of water-related violence have occurred over the past four decades or so.
