Steven Jones is accused in the Oct. 9, 2015, fatal shooting at Northern Arizona University.

A former NAU student will be sentenced a month from now after pleading guilty last week to one count of manslaughter and three counts of aggravated assault.

Steven Jones was a freshman at the Flagstaff university when he says he was assaulted off-campus in October, 2015. He admitted to running to his car, grabbing a pistol and fatally shooting another student who he says assaulted him. He also wounded three others involved in the incident.

An earlier trial ended in a hung jury. Jones has agreed to accept a sentence of five to 10 years in prison.

Anne Ryman, a reporter with the Arizona Republic who has covered this case since the beginning, joined The Show to explain why Jones accepted the plea deal.
